Ezekial

Ezekial the prophet consistently compared facts with reality. The dry bones prophecy symbolizes the impossible to become possible. The spiritual question this prophecy raises is, how could this possibly happen? Again, there is a big question mark related to this particular prophecy. Can these bones come to life? His prophecy raises doubt. Another question is, can we understand what Ezekial’s vision means, or by his prophecy, was he trying to challenge the nature of God? Can any kind of wish come true? Is this the backbone of Jewish eternity?

The Babylonian Exile
(Pslams 137)

The morning of the exiles in Babylon, by the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down. Yay, we wept when we remembered Zion. We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof. For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, “sing us one of the songs of Zion.” How shall we sing the Lords song in a strange land? If I forget the O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning.

Akaeda

Abraham sacrificing Isaac. The intense and powerful image of Abraham Avenu, our father, devoted and faithful to He who commands both the heavens and the earth. Abraham’s obedience, fortitude, and absolute trust, hint at his future accomplishments. In this event, Abraham’s relationship with God transitioned into a very close, unique, and personal one. Throughout his life, his dialogues and debates with God never resulted in a victory. But that is not to say that he was not a winner, nonetheless. He was able to make many an alliance, as is noted in the circumcisions and with God’s help, Abraham used those partnerships to come to a unique level of opulence, not only monetarily, but spiritually as well. That was necessary to create the Jewish nation that flowed forth.

Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden

This piece portrays Eve seducing Adam to have a taste of the fruit from the Tree of Life. The snake’s poisonous-ness contrasts with its abounding glory and magnificence, both of which led Eve to play into his hands. This is the ancient sin. Through this historical sin and the pyramid of its characters, we are taught of one of the most basic aspects of human nature, weakness and fragility. This side of us all is vulnerable, susceptible, and is occasionally, exposed.

The Bar Mitzvah

One of the ironies of Jewish youth arrives at the age thirteen, which is the Bar Mitzvah, in that their father has been invited to the synagogue to come and read the Torah. Allegedly, he finds himself blessing God for the relief he feels at not having any more liability for his Bar Mitzvah boy. While the Bar Mitzvah boy makes a commitment to start carrying his own liabilities and dues, this part of the Jewish youths life is always connected to symbols and metaphors of the taphiline, which is put upon their forehead and left arm. This event leaves a tremendous positive scar in the memory of the young Jewish youths. Is this the power of memory, willingness to remember, or what could happen without it?

The Golden Calf

Glowing with magnificence and holiness, Moses stepped down from Mt. Sinai only to hear and unusual blair coming from the Israelites camp site. He knew his brother Aaron was at fault for he heard him loudly proclaim, “this is your God people of Israel!” When Moses descended with Joshua, he felt, for the first time, that the people of Israel were detestable. In a very unique moment, Moses came close to losing his passion. He split the people saying, “Who is on God’s side shall step forward.” He then ordered them to clean the camp and bring it back to a livable state - to husk the wheat, clean the stables, menial labor. Thus, the people were able to being anew.

Ha-Asere Leminyan

Jewish tradition requires that one must have a minimum of ten people over thirteen years old in order to pray Ha-asere Leminyan. Finding this essential tenth person was always a challenge or possibly a pleasant hunt for the rabbi’s assistant. It was not uncommon to hear craziest of excuses as each person tried to squirm out of the responsibility, while at the same time attempting to feel guilt free. Unfortunately, the most common response was, “have you tried my neighbor?”

The End of Days – Isaiah’s Prediction

The optimistic vision of the end of days by Isaiah; one of the most positive prophets of his generation says, “the wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, the calf and the young lion and the python together, a winged child shall put his hand in the viper’s den and the little child shall lead them. This calm and clear vision stands above the others of his time. The polarity between the natural enemies is seemingly nonexistent. Humans and animals, predator and prey; all living in peace together.

Jacob’s Dream

Jacob’s Dream illustrates the third and final occasion that God communicates the promises set out for the generations to come. And thus, Jacob is the last of the greats that is blessed by his descendants and immigrating to Egypt with his seventy family members, Jacob greatly helped the seed of the nation sprout. Jacob, a man who never shied away from hard work, a man who was not afraid to face a challenge, a man who was the third part in creating a melting pot of a nation. Jacob, a man who dedicated his life to ensuring that the reality of his dreams blossomed into the reality we know today.

Joseph’s Dreams

Nothing has ever come to being without first being dreamt of. In Jacob’s actions, we see an extraordinary example for us to follow. As Joseph grew, Jacob began to realize that his youngest and most beloved son was not only charming, romantic, and handsome, but was also remarkably brave in revealing the dreams he had been having. Jacob new that Joseph would grow into a great phenomenon and that it would be both impossible and wrong for him to attempt to control or interfere with fate. His great decision was to keep this knowledge a secret and let the boy be, even though these dreams questioned his authority as a father, and could potentially tear apart the family. Even though the dreams depicted the entire family bowing down to the youngest son, Jacob, while horrified, understand the messages of Joseph’s dreams. He understood that they were a hint of what was to come. He knew he could not interfere, even as Joseph’s persistent vocalization of his dreams almost brought him into the abyss. Nothing can happen unless God intends it to be so. One must accept that not everything is possible.

The Promise Land

The land of wheat, barley, wine, figs, pomegranate, honey, and olive oil. Each of the seven items that God blessed Israel with has a symbolic meaning in Jewish heritage. Symbols such as these are prevalent all throughout the Bible. For example, the four kinds of fruit we use in Sukkot. The first has taste, but no scent; the second, scent but no taste; the third, both taste and scent, and the fourth, has neither. This symbolizes the nature of the holiday; that no matter what kind of a person you are, you’re welcome to join us in celebration. Symbolism and metaphors are an invaluable tool in understanding the Jewish heritage and religion.
